Volume One in the Crime Scene Houston Series, The Chase.
This book introduces us to Kariss, a sharp and spirited writer who has decided to switch genres from woman's fiction to suspense. Her idea is to write the stories from FBI cold-cases, and for this she is teamed up with FBI Agent Santiago Harris. When Santiago and Karriss re-open the case of Cherished Doe, will they find her killer and stay alive?
The Survivor is the sequel to The Chase, and I really think that for the fullest reading pleasure you should buy both and read them together! :-)
In The Survivor, Kariss is contacted by a Christian counselor who was herself the victim of a brutal assault as a child. Over the last decades, this woman has turned her compassion and understanding into Freedom's Way Counseling. Now, Dr. Amy Garrett wants to tell her story, in fiction, with Kariss' help. Kariss accepts the project, with some trepidation... and much curiosity. After a near-death experience of her own while working with Santiago on the Cherished Doe case, Kariss understands the trauma that a violent attack produces.
Besides, tackling a project like this will keep her mind off a certain Agent who has established a place in her heart.
Santiago and Kariss have broken off their relationship, giving Santiago time wrestle with the question of who Jesus is and what kind of call He has on his life.
One thing is sure, Tigo's life needs to include Kariss Walker, but before that can happen they must both know and serve the same Lord.
So Kariss and Santiago bury themselves in their work, he investigating crime and she writing Dr. Garrett's story.
Soon though, their work connects them again as the man who killed so many other victims returns and tries to claim the one survivor. Amy Garrett is not alone in danger, she is dragging Kariss into the line of fire along with her.
As I read, there were two main questions in my mind: "How can Kariss and Tigo possibly keep avoiding one another like this when they mean so much to each other?!!!!" and "How long will this stalker be able to keep tormenting Amy before he is stopped?"
These two questions, and their answers, made for some very compelling reading.
